Houston families applying from independent schools often have one highly selective university in their own city, Rice, alongside the two Texas flagships and colleges across the country. Each of those runs on different rules, and one Texas rule in particular, automatic admission by class rank, often doesn't apply to students at schools that don't rank.

For the Texas-wide picture, see our guides to UT Austin and Texas A&M for private school students and Dallas private school students. This guide focuses on Houston.

Rice University: Two Binding Rounds

Rice offers Early Decision I and Early Decision II, both binding. According to Rice, for the 2026–27 cycle, Early Decision I applications are due November 1, with decisions by mid-December, and Early Decision II applications are due January 4, with decisions by late January. Regular Decision is also due January 4, with decisions by April 1. Deferred Early Decision applicants are reconsidered with the Regular Decision pool.

Early Decision II is worth noting for Houston students. A student who applies early elsewhere in November and doesn't get in can still make a binding commitment to Rice in January, once senior fall grades are in. As always with binding plans, it only makes sense for a clear first choice the family can afford without comparing offers. Our guide to Early Decision and Early Action covers the trade-offs.

What's Distinctive About the Rice Application

  • The Rice Box. Rice asks every applicant to share an image of something that appeals to them, a long-standing tradition that gives students a chance to show a side of themselves the rest of the application doesn't.
  • Rice-specific writing. Two short responses of up to 150 words, on the academic areas a student selected and on what appeals to them about Rice, plus a 500-word essay chosen from two prompts: one on the residential college system and one on the perspectives a student would bring to the Rice community.
  • Testing is recommended, not required. Rice says it "recommends" that applicants submit SAT or ACT scores if available.
  • Music applicants follow a different track. Applicants to the Shepherd School of Music must apply by December 1 and aren't eligible for either Early Decision round.
  • Optional interviews and videos. Rice offers virtual interviews with alumni or current students, which applicants request after submitting their application: by November 3 for Early Decision I, and by January 6 for Early Decision II and Regular Decision. Separately, students may submit an optional 60–90-second Glimpse video, due November 10 for Early Decision I and January 12 for Early Decision II and Regular Decision.

The Texas Flagships Without Automatic Admission

Texas's automatic admission law covers graduates of accredited private schools, but it depends on class rank. For UT Austin, the cutoff for fall 2027 is the top 5%; other public universities use the top 10%. Texas A&M, for example, asks for an official transcript "that includes a numeric rank" to qualify. Students at Houston schools that don't rank therefore go through holistic review, where course rigor, essays, activities, and the competitiveness of the intended major carry the weight.

Two practical points: UT Austin requires at least one official SAT or ACT score, and its early action deadline is October 15, a few weeks before most early deadlines. Texas A&M is test-optional.

A Testing Plan for a Mixed List

A typical Houston list mixes policies: UT Austin requires a score, Rice recommends one, Texas A&M is optional, and some highly selective colleges elsewhere, such as MIT and Stanford, require one. For most students applying to that kind of list, testing is part of the plan; the question is when to submit and where. Our testing strategy guide covers how to decide.

Families New to U.S. Admissions

Some Houston families are navigating American college admissions for the first time, including families who have relocated from abroad and students who hold more than one citizenship. The process rewards starting early: understanding how colleges read a transcript, how testing and early plans work, and how financial aid differs for citizens and international students. Our guide to international student admissions covers the essentials, and our international and global admissions advising is built for families in that position.

A Fall Calendar for Houston Applicants

  • October 15: UT Austin early action.

  • January 4: Rice Early Decision II and Regular Decision. Request an interview by January 6; Glimpse videos are due January 12.
