Students at Dallas's independent schools usually weigh three kinds of options at once: Texas's public flagships, private universities in Texas such as SMU, and selective colleges across the country. Each group plays by different rules, and one Texas rule in particular, automatic admission by class rank, works very differently for private school students than many families expect.

This guide covers the Texas-specific pieces. For how colleges read an independent school application in general, see our guide to applying to college from a private school. We also publish editorial guides to individual Dallas schools, based on each school's published profile, including Greenhill, Hockaday, St. Mark's School of Texas, and the Episcopal School of Dallas.

Texas Automatic Admission and the Class Rank Question

Texas law requires its public universities to admit applicants who graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school class. The statute covers graduates of "a public or private high school in this state accredited by a generally recognized accrediting organization," so accredited private schools are included.

UT Austin is the exception to the 10 percent figure. State law lets it limit automatic admission to 75 percent of its spaces for first-time Texas residents, so it sets a narrower cutoff each year. For summer and fall 2027 applicants, that cutoff is the top 5 percent. UT Austin says it notifies Texas school officials each fall of the class rank current juniors need to reach by the end of junior year.

Here's the catch for private school families: automatic admission depends on class standing. Many independent schools don't rank students, and a student whose school doesn't report rank can't use a rank-based guarantee. That student is considered through holistic review instead, like every applicant outside the automatic pool.

Two practical steps:

  1. Ask your school's college counselor, by junior fall, whether and how the school reports class standing for Texas automatic admission.
  2. Plan for holistic review at UT Austin and Texas A&M unless your student clearly qualifies. UT Austin says that in holistic review, "No specific class rank, test score or other qualification by itself" ensures admission, and that reviewers weigh factors including the strength of the academic background, test scores, and the competitiveness of the major applied to.

Because UT Austin asks every applicant why they chose their first-choice major, and weighs the major's competitiveness in review, the choice of major is a strategic decision there. SMU, Close to Home

Southern Methodist University, in University Park, is a natural option for many Dallas families. For fall 2027, SMU's deadlines are:

  • November 1, 2026: Early Action (nonbinding) and Early Decision I (binding).
  • January 15, 2027: Regular Decision (nonbinding) and Early Decision II (binding).

SMU is test-optional and superscores the SAT and ACT. As with any college offering both, the choice between its Early Decision and Early Action plans comes down to certainty and cost; our guide to Early Decision and Early Action walks through it.

Testing When Your List Crosses Policies

A typical Dallas list mixes a test-required public flagship, test-optional private colleges, and possibly the University of California, which doesn't consider SAT or ACT scores at all. That makes testing a planning question rather than a yes-or-no one: a student applying to UT Austin needs a score, and the same score may or may not help at a test-optional college depending on its range. Our testing strategy guide covers how to decide college by college.

Applying Beyond Texas

Many Dallas independent school students apply to selective colleges nationally, where holistic review, supplemental essays, and early plans dominate. These guides cover the essentials:
