For strong students who want to stay in Florida, an honors program can offer something close to a small-college experience inside a large public university: smaller classes, dedicated advising, early registration, and a community of motivated peers. But "honors" means something different at each university, and so does getting in. Some programs read an extra essay inside the main application. Others run a separate application with its own deadlines, or invite students only after they're admitted. Missing a step can mean missing the program, or its scholarships.

This guide covers the honors programs at six Florida public universities for students entering in fall 2027. Every detail comes from the universities' own published pages, listed at the end.

Key takeaways

  • There's no single way in. Some honors programs use an essay inside the main application, some use a separate application, and some invite students after admission.
  • Timing matters most at UF. Students must apply to Honors by the Early Action deadline to be considered for the Lombardi and Stamps scholarships, and the Honors essay can't be added later.
  • USF and UCF have their own honors deadlines, separate from university admission. At UCF, seats go first-come, first-served.
  • FAU's Wilkes Honors College is a separate all-honors liberal arts college on the Jupiter campus, with its own housing requirement and scholarships.
  • Most programs set GPA and coursework requirements for staying in honors, so families should read those as closely as the admission rules.

University of Florida Honors Program

UF publishes more about Honors selectivity than most. It says it admits about 2,000 first-year students to Honors each year to enroll a class of about 700 to 725, and that more than 21,000 students applied to join the program for summer and fall 2026.

The application is built into UF's Common App. Students who want Honors complete an additional Honors essay, and UF is explicit that "students cannot go back and complete the Honors essay after submitting their UF application." The deadline matters too. Applicants must apply to Honors by the Early Action deadline, November 1, to be considered for UF's Lombardi and Stamps scholarships. Regular Decision applicants aren't eligible for either scholarship.

UF's Office of Admissions makes Honors decisions using both objective measures (GPA and test scores) and the Honors essay. The Honors decision arrives with the UF admission decision. If the letter doesn't mention Honors, the student wasn't admitted, and UF says there's no appeal or waitlist. Students can still apply later through lateral admission as rising sophomores. Students admitted through UF Online or PaCE aren't eligible as freshmen. Our guide to UF's PaCE and Innovation Academy offers explains those pathways.

For context, UF reports that the middle 50% of all students it admitted for 2026 had a recalculated core GPA of 4.5 to 4.7, an ACT of 32 to 35, or an SAT of 1420 to 1520. Honors applicants compete within that already strong pool.

Benefits include faculty advisors, Honors courses, early registration starting with the second semester, and priority housing in Honors Village. To stay in, first-year students must complete two Honors courses with a B or higher and hold a 3.5 cumulative UF GPA by the end of their first spring. UF says only a small percentage fall short, and there's an appeals process for the GPA requirement.

Florida State University Honors Program

FSU's process has two steps. Students apply to FSU by December 1, 2026, and answer "Yes" to the question "Are you interested in applying to the Honors Program?" It's on the Additional Academic History page of the FSU Application, or under Academics in the Common App's questions. They then complete a separate Honors supplemental application, which FSU says can take up to 48 hours to appear after the FSU application is submitted. Decisions come out February 18, 2027.

The 2026 supplemental prompt asks students to pick two FSU majors from different departments, design an Honors Signature Course at the intersection of the two, and explain what students would gain from it, in 250 to 350 words. The same response also serves as the application for FSU's Presidential Scholars program. FSU reviews Honors applicants holistically, considering grades and curriculum, honors and awards, activities, talents, test scores, and the prompt response.

FSU says its program is the only one in the state with a dedicated cohort of Honors Core Faculty, full-time instructors who design the program's courses. To complete the program, students earn 18 Honors credits, including a first-term Honors colloquium and at least one Signature Course, with a minimum 3.2 FSU GPA. Specialized tracks within Honors include Honors Legal Scholars, Honors Medical Scholars, and the Seneff Honors Program in business.

USF Judy Genshaft Honors College

At the University of South Florida, the Honors College runs its own admission process, separate from USF's. Students submit the USF application, then a separate Honors application through their applicant portal. They don't need to wait for a USF decision to apply. Honors reviews applications in three rounds:

StandardDecember 16, 2026February 10, 2027April 1, 2027
FinalMarch 1, 2027April 9, 2027May 1, 2027

The application has two parts: a 500 to 750 word essay, which asks students to design a course they'd teach in the Honors curriculum, and a list of up to five activities with room to explain each. USF sets no minimum GPA or test score. It reports that most Honors students have a 4.10 to 4.58 GPA, a 1300 to 1460 SAT, or a 28 to 33 ACT. For fall 2027, National Merit Semifinalists and Finalists admitted to USF are admitted to Honors automatically. USF plans to enroll about 625 Honors students in Tampa and about 75 in St. Petersburg.

USF says joining Honors carries no extra fees. Its optional Honors living-learning community costs $125 a semester. Honors students take six Honors courses, including a capstone or thesis, and can earn $2,000 in Honors scholarships paid in three parts as they complete requirements.

UCF Burnett Honors College

UCF's Burnett Honors College sends invitations to apply to academically strong students after they're admitted to UCF, but any high-achieving incoming freshman can request an application. Applications open September 15 and can be submitted before UCF admission, but Honors won't review them until the student is admitted. Decisions are rolling, usually within three to five weeks. UCF says Honors students typically represent the top 8% of its freshmen.

Three dates matter:

  • February 1: the priority deadline. Students admitted to UCF who submit a complete Honors application by then are considered for the $2,000 Honors Enhancement Scholarship. Early applicants also get earlier access to Honors housing room selection and Honors orientation.
  • March 31: the final deadline. Later applications are considered only if space remains.
  • May 1: the reply deadline. Seats are reserved first-come, first-served once the student has submitted both the Honors reply form and the UCF enrollment deposit.

That last point catches families off guard. When the class fills, UCF places students on a waitlist ordered by the date of their UCF enrollment deposit and orientation registration, not by the date they were admitted to Honors. National Merit Finalists who submit a complete application by the deadline are accepted.

FAU Wilkes Honors College

Florida Atlantic University's Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College is different from the other five. Rather than an honors program inside a large university, it's a separate all-honors liberal arts college on FAU's Jupiter campus. Students apply through FAU's Common App and indicate that they're applying to the Wilkes Honors College. Living on campus is required for the first two years.

FAU reports an incoming profile of a 1230 to 1370 SAT, a 26 to 30 ACT, and a 4.0 to 4.5 weighted GPA. It looks for evidence that students took the most challenging courses available, whether AICE, AP, IB, dual enrollment, or honors. A resume and a graded writing sample are optional.

Scholarships are a major draw. Students admitted by January 15 are eligible for the highest awards. Florida residents can compete for the Henry Morrison Flagler Scholarship, which covers tuition, room, and board not covered by Bright Futures and is worth more than $72,000 over four years. Flagler Scholars commit to four years at the college and live on campus all four. FAU also publishes scholarship levels tied to GPA and test scores. For Florida residents, the top level, for a 4.0 GPA and a 1410 SAT or 32 ACT, is worth $24,000 over four years.

FIU Honors College

At Florida International University, students must be admitted to FIU first. The Honors College reviews applicants during FIU's first and second early review periods and sends invitations with the FIU admission decision. Students who aren't invited may apply after admission if they have at least a 3.7 weighted GPA, as calculated by FIU, and at least a 1230 SAT, 26 ACT, or 86 CLT. That application, through the MyFIU portal, asks for a 300 to 500 word personal statement and a one-page resume.

Joining is free. Benefits include priority registration, Honors scholarships, study abroad programs, research opportunities, career coaching, and Honors housing at Parkview Residence Hall. Invited students must confirm their place through MyFIU. FIU says the college has more than 3,000 students.

Is Honors Worth It?

For many students, yes, but not automatically. Honors usually offers smaller discussion-based classes, earlier registration, a built-in community, and in some cases real scholarship money. Several of these programs also run their own research, thesis, and fellowship advising.

The trade-offs are the requirements. Each program sets course, GPA, and completion standards, from UF's 3.5 GPA checkpoint after the first year to FSU's 18 Honors credits. Some, like FAU's Wilkes Honors College, also require campus housing. A student who would rather spread out their schedule, double major in a demanding field, or keep options open may find the requirements limiting. Read each program's continuation rules as closely as its admission rules.

Honors also changes the cost picture. For eligible students, Bright Futures already covers much or all of tuition at Florida's public universities. Honors scholarships, like FAU's awards or UF's Lombardi and Stamps, can cover what's left. Our guides to Bright Futures and merit aid show how the pieces fit together.

A Planning Calendar for Honors Applicants

  • Summer before senior year: Draft the honors essays alongside the main personal statement. FSU's and USF's prompts both ask students to design a course, which takes original thinking, not a recycled personal statement.
  • October 15 and November 1: UF's Early Decision and Early Action deadlines. Apply by November 1 with the Honors essay for scholarship consideration.
  • November 2: USF Honors' earliest round.
  • December 1: FSU's application and Honors interest.
  • January 15: the date by which FAU Wilkes admits must be admitted for the top scholarships.
  • February 1: UCF's Honors priority deadline.
  • May 1: the confirmation deadline at UF, UCF, and FAU, and for USF's final Honors round. Confirm Honors as well as university enrollment.

Our guide to UF, FSU, and the University of Miami covers the main application calendars, and our college essay guide covers the writing. Families in Palm Beach County and Miami-Dade will find more local context in our regional guides.

Final Thought

Florida's honors programs reward students who plan ahead: the right essay, submitted in the right round, and confirmed on time. The details differ enough from school to school that one calendar for all six is worth building early in senior year. Our college admissions advising helps families decide which honors programs fit and plan the applications that go with them.

FAQs

Common questions about Florida's honors programs

Do I need a separate application for honors at Florida universities?

It depends on the university. UF uses an extra Honors essay inside its Common App, FSU asks for a "Yes" on its application plus a supplemental short answer, and USF and UCF have separate Honors applications. FAU's Wilkes Honors College is chosen on FAU's Common App, and FIU invites students with their admission or lets qualified students apply afterward.

When should I apply for the UF Honors Program?

By UF's Early Action deadline, November 1, if you want to be considered for the Lombardi and Stamps scholarships. Regular Decision applicants aren't eligible for those scholarships, and the Honors essay can't be added after the UF application is submitted.

Does it cost extra to be in honors?

USF says there are no extra fees for its Honors College, though its optional Honors living-learning community costs $125 a semester. FIU says joining its Honors College is free. Check each program for housing or program fees.

Can I join an honors program after my first year?

Often, yes. UF offers lateral admission for rising sophomores, FSU has lateral admissions, USF accepts current students (usually first-year students applying for their second year), and FIU accepts current students who meet its GPA requirements.

Do National Merit students get into honors automatically?

At some universities. USF automatically admits National Merit Semifinalists and Finalists who are admitted to USF for fall 2027, and UCF accepts National Merit Finalists who submit a complete Honors application by the deadline.
